The scheme formed part of a new foul sewer construction replacing existing pipework which had collapsed necessitating emergency over pumping between existing manholes. All work including the construction of shafts, and installation of new pipeline connections in shafts and reinstatement was to be undertaken by a single contractor.

This project demonstrate how AWL can install different diameters of pipe with variable drive lengths without the need to use any third-party equipment.

Allen Watson Limited are currently on a Southern Water project titled The Street Hothfield Kent.

All civil works including the shaft construction are being undertaken by AWL partner Cappagh Construction. The works require the construction of 5 No shafts and the installation by guided auger boring of 200 metres of DN300 non-primed steel pipelines which have either a Violet light cure liner installed or slip lined with Funke Gruppe HS Drainage pipe. AWL will use its own GAB 155 and 85v Guided Auger Bore machine with optical electronic navigation.

The 92-metre pilot operation for the first bore as been completed to the accuracy specified by the hydraulic design.

Following the pilot and reaming operation the pipe pull as commenced to install 500 metres of 323mmØ steel pipework on a project at Askern near Doncaster.

Once installed the pipeline will be used to transport fuel through a disused landfill site.

Mobilisation commences at Askern South Yorkshire for the installation of 500 metres of 323mmØ Steel Pipework by Horizontal Directional Drilling.

Prior to drilling Allen Watson have fusion welded a SDR11 slurry return line from the reception pit back to a mud recycling unit.

The bore will be through sands, silts with majority in mudstone and sandstone drilling between 12m to 14m BGL using AWL 160te directional drill rig complete with mud mixing and recycling unit, walk-over tracking, 6¾” mud motor complete with drill bit for piloting followed by appropriate sized reamers for enlarging the bore to suit the pipe installation.

The works were split into three drives in varying lengths. Working from 2.4 metre caisson shafts with trench sheets at a depth below 4 metres a 74-metre drive was installed before rotating the GAB machine and installing a 24-metre drive from the same caisson shaft. Following installation, the pipelines were connected in the drive shaft and fully tested in accordance with EN610.

The third pipeline required installation from another 2.4 metre caisson shaft at a depth of 5 metres which was required so the installed pipeline was 3 metres beneath a CLH pipeline (CLH-PS) fuel pipeline. To ensure that the ground movement beneath the CLH pipeline was inside the acceptable limits the pipeline had to be exposed and monitored by authorised personal wduring the installation of the jacking pipes. Following the installation of the jacking pipes the ground around the CLH pipeline was reinstated under supervision.

The ground conditions for the third drive changed to chalk with a high level of flint, water was added during the auger process which slowed the installation rate from 12 metres per shift to 5 metres. As installation progressed the full 18,000Nm of rotary torque was required, to rotate the flight augers in the hard ground encounted.

Allen Watson Limited latest project at North Chippenham was visited by Wessex Water Engineers to witness the installation of DN225 Naylor Denlok VC pipes by guided Auger Boring.

The project required 45 metres bore under a very busy junction outside a superstore at a depth of 4 metres, without any disruption to the traffic movement.

During the visit the engineers witnessed the pilot operation which was completed to line and level before the transition to the auger process.
